Where to start? We have had big dreams of building a house since before we were married 12 years ago. The location of our “dream house” changed a few times and of course so did the house. We flipped a ton of books long before we knew anything about Pinterest. Even though our plans changed quite a bit we always stuck with the same style. Classic, timeless. When the time finally came that we were able to make our dream a reality naturally we started all over. So many hours spent on looking at house plans. One of our biggest problems was finding everything that was on our “must have” list. I mean, if we are going to be paying all this money, then its has got to be something that we are completely happy with. So here’s our must have list.
- Non- Open concept
- Mud room- separate from laundry room
- Large kitchen with a BIG island.
- Fireplace
- Foyer
- Large Half bath
- Stairs (it didn’t matter it was a half story or 2 stories but i had to have stairs)
- Playroom/Homeschooling room
There were a few things that we had thought of but wasn’t a deal breaker. Like a family closest with the washer and dryer in it, up stairs preferably. That didn’t happen, we just couldn’t make it work. Of course there are other things we would like in our house but we just put those on our ” in the future” list. A few examples, built in’s , a carport, a large outdoor living area. I don’t think I could ever stop adding to my “in the future” list, with our kids getting older things are always changing around here and we like to make our home as comfortable as possible for us. This is where we spend most of our time, its our oasis.
So when it came down to it we literally drew our house plans out on graph paper. Have I ever mentioned how amazing our contractor was? He saved us a so much money by not having to have traditional blueprints. The best part was we were in charge of our house. Every little detail so we wanted to make sure everything was intentional and had a purpose that worked for us. From the placement of the windows, doors, light switches even the outlets we had a say in everything! It was a bit overwhelming at times and me being a chronic over thinker I may have spent too much time thinking about some of it.
It looks pretty simple but it has a ton a character. The downstairs isn’t open concept but because of the layout it still feels pretty open. If you like to take a tour you can watch on the Living It County YouTube Channel. On this video I give some details about our home and all decor.
