Desa
Desa is our oldest pup and is a rescue. She was dropped off on the backroad we were living on at the time, over 10 years ago. She was abandoned in the middle of winter and was in pretty bad shape when she wandered into our yard. We took her into our family, and she has been by our sides ever since. Whether it is because of bad experiences as a puppy, or just her personality, Desa has always been extremely aloof to people and other animals, even those she has known her entire life. She does seem to have a bond with Copper, maybe its because he acts like an old dog.We had an extremely tough time bringing her along when we moved houses these last 2 times as she is terrified of being picked up. She does not have a mean bone in her body though, and watches over our children like they are her own. She has served as a loyal watchdog for our family for a decade now and hopefully will continue for many more years.
Hendrix
Our “Shiranian” Hendrix is our oldest male dog at 9 years old and means a lot to our family. We sought out a puppy for comfort after a second failed IUI while we were going through fertility treatments as a young couple, and he was the perfect dog for this role. He loves to show, and be shown, affection, and is always up to snuggle on the couch on a lazy rainy day. These dogs are known for their loyalty, and that trait definitely shines through in ours.
Copper
Copper is our fun loving 3 year old white lab. He is actually a rescue that was found in the middle of a deer lease along with his mother and other puppies after a hurricane. When I saw him I knew we had to adopt him. He has an amazing bond with our youngest son. He is the largest inside dog we have ever had, and while he sheds more than we were prepared for, he is a welcome addition. He is surprisingly low energy for a lab, and has an amazing temperament. He has been wonderful with our youngest, who was still a baby when we got him. We have even caught her “riding” him a time or two, and I’m pretty sure he loved the attention.
Hatchet
Hatchet is our 6 month old border collie pup, and is quite a handful. He is a fun loving puppy with a goofy little tongue that is always hanging out. I have always heard that border collies are one of the smartest dog breeds in the world, and I can definitely believe it. He has shown a great willingness to be trained and has a huge desire to please. Immediately after being introduced to the livestock his genetics kicked in, and while he wasn’t sure exactly what he was supposed to do, he knew he was supposed to do something. Now we are working on curbing his enthusiasm, and harnessing his eagerness and intelligence so that he can lighten our load around the farm.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin is our playful little bob-tailed “barn” cat. Although, I’m not sure you can be considered a barn cat when you sleep in a comfy house on the porch all day. In his defense, he’s only about 5 months old, so there is still plenty of time for him to grown into a ferocious mouse hunter. We have a tendency to give all of our pets nicknames, but Pumpkin currently holds the record for the most, as our youngest daughter makes up a new name for him once a week.
My kids feed the animals so if they forget to tell me we are out of cat food or dog food (it has happened one too many times, Ha!) then we are usually making a mad dash for the store. Thankfully we found Chewy.com and now we are on auto ship so we never run out! Best thing is I can add other stuff that I need to my order or push it back a few weeks if we don’t need it yet.
