One of the most used rooms in our house is our mudroom, which is exactly why we wanted it. We also have a “mud porch” that leads into the mud room so there would be plenty of space for everyone to take off their shoes and jackets before coming into the house.
When we first moved into our house 4 months ago we thru up a shelf that we already had because we knew that the start of winter also meant the start of double the laundry around here. SIX people + all the winter layers equals a lot of extra clothes and we soon found out our little shelf with 4 hooks wasn’t going to cut it.
I had a few different ideas of what I wanted to do in the mudroom to add more shelving and coat racks and I think I picked the best one. We decided to add a board and batten wall with a built in shelf and hooks. I wanted it to be functional but also to be able to decorate.
We started by measuring our space and deciding how much spacing we wanted between our batten boards, then we had to decide on a height. This is where we had a little trouble deciding because I an short and we have four young kids so we wanted everyone to be able to reach it but I also wanted it to be a statement wall. We ended up settling on 6 foot for the height of the shelf. (We have 9 foot ceilings.) We measured out our spacing and used liquid nails and a brad nailer to hold the 1×2’s in place (make sure to use a level!!) . Then we added a 1×4 board across the top.Under the 1×4’s I added peg rails, we had to cut them to fit our spaces. For the shelf we used a 1×8 board. We cut it to the length we wanted and used the left over pieces of the 1×8 for the triangle corbels. I caulked all the spaces around the boards and nail holes then added a fresh coat of white paint that matched our trim.
I absolutely LOVE it!!! It changed our space so much. Its so much brighter and way more functional. It was a pretty cheap project and only took us 2 days to complete. It could have easily been finished in one day but we paused to work on the chicken coop because those little chicks couldn’t get out of my house fast enough !
