I am a lover of old things. In fact, our entire family seems to have this in common. Antiquing is a family past time, and one of the few things that the entire bunch gets excited for. Many of the pieces in our home were picked up throughout the years, with some of them sitting in storage for years waiting for the time where we would have our new house and the space to put them on display. As much as I love all the antiques we have found throughout the years, the pieces displayed in our home that I love the most, are the ones with real sentimental value. Things with family history have a special place in my
heart and I always try to find a special place for them in our home.
One of these items is the farm table which is now the base for the sink in our mudroom. The table was handmade sometime in the early 20th century and served as the kitchen table for my great-grandparents. It is absolutely loaded with character, which just makes me love it even more. In fact, you
can still see scarring from kitchen knives where they prepared food on it. After being saved from a house fire, the table was put into an old barn on the property, where it sat in storage for decades, before we rediscovered it about 5 years ago. Alongside the table in storage, we actually found some of the
hand tools that were made to build it, and will be looking for the right spot to display those in the future. Unfortunately, 2 of the legs of the table had significant damage. We knew that it would be nearly impossible to match with new legs, and we did not want to change all 4 legs for new, so we had to get
creative with how we were going to display the piece in our new home.
Before… After..
We had decided on putting a sink in our mudroom, as we needed a place for the kids to clean up before coming inside, and during construction our builder found us a beautiful 1920’s enameled cast iron sink under a house they were demolishing. With a little elbow grease, we brought some shine back to the
sink’s surface and knew that it would look amazing with our old table as a base.
It was not easy to cut the table up, but we were able to use most of the table that was in good condition, so I was happy to repurpose it and bring it back to life. It warms my heart to know that this piece of my family’s history wont slowly rot away and be forgotten in a dilapidated barn in the woods. It
is now a statement piece in our beautiful home and will remain in the family for as long as I have anything to say about it.
