This weekend on the farm we had lots of projects and lots of little hands to help. The great thing about us jumping all in on this farming stuff is that our kids get to learn right along with us. Of course, to them we already know everything, so don’t tell them we are all learning at the same time. All four of our kids enjoying it just as much as we do, two of them probably more so. I think sometimes they were born to live on a farm. I grew up dreaming of living in a big white house in the middle of a pasture surrounded by rolling hills and farm animals, So I am so thankful that we can give that to them at such an early age and that they seem to truly enjoy it.
This Saturday was all about the fences. Our littlest boy dressed himself and was ready to get to work. We set a deadline for ourselves to get the bottom pasture fence finished so that after we worked the cattle this weekend, they could be moved down there. We are currently doing electric fence on the interior pastures and fixing the barbwire fences along the perimeter of our property. The electric fence has been great, it goes up fast, the kids love helping put the clips on the t-post and it’s very cost effective as well. After working all day on the fence, and working the cattle for the first time, we had a delivery of hay that had to be unloaded. We managed to get the hay off of the truck and stacked in its place at the back of the property before sunset. We don’t have a hay barn yet so it’s been stored in a few different spots on the property this year. The kids definitely don’t mind, they had a blast climbing to the top of the stack to help cover it with the tarp. With everyone absolutely beat from a full day’s work, we settled around a camp fire and ate a pot of chili while sitting under the stars. It really does not get much better than that.
We are truly blessed with some great kiddos. Maybe it is from being home schooled, but they love to be involved and enjoy learning everything they can about whatever we are doing, whether its farm related or not. We have always tried to explain things to him and help them understand how things work no matter what it is. The great thing about the way we home school is that we don’t just “learn” when we are sitting down doing “school work”, we teach life lessons all the time. I think our little farmers will be experts by the time they are grown.
I’ve gotta a few questions about where we buy all of our farm supplies. Thankfully there is a Tractor Supply right up the road from us. I have to say I shop there more than I do any department store.
